Petrol Classes

Engine Classification – Petrol Motors

Petrol motors recognised and used under the AMPBA rules fall in to two (2) categories. They are:

  • 16-27cc capacity, spark ignition (no glow plugs or converted glow plug engines) and
  • 16-35cc capacity, spark ignition (no glow plugs or converted glow plug engines).

Engines must be fuelled by petrol/oil mix with a RON of 98 or less with no other additives permitted. Fuel is usually supplied by the contestant but is subject to random testing by race officials as required.

There are no restrictions on engine modifications which may be carried out and electric starting is permitted.

Engines must be able to be stopped on the water by transmitter control.

Petrol engines may be used in all hull configurations covered by the AMPBA rules as long as all of the particular class requirements are met.

Typical classes are:

  • 16-27cc Mono Hull
  • 16-27cc Hydroplane
  • 16-27cc Tunnel
  • 16-35cc Mono Hull
  • 16-35cc Hydroplane
  • 16-35cc Tunnel
  • 0-35cc Offshore Class 1

There are classes which allow greater than 35cc in total capacity, usually by the use of multiple engines. They are:

  • 35-70cc Twin Petrol Outrigger Hydro
  • 0-70cc Offshore Lites
  • 35-70cc Offshore Class 2

In the case of 0ffshore classes, an effective failsafe is required which causes the motor to stop should radio signal be lost.
